so i got a "weedeater" brand weed eater and a weedeater brand lawnmower, i haven't had any issues out of the mower in the last 2 years, but this one string wonder weedeater is really gettin on my nerves.

i got it out this year, and ofc my kids had lost the gas cap for it over the winter, so after i spent 10 bucks for a new cap, put some gas in it, the darn thing has carb issues, i can't get it to stay running without choking it. and anytime i hit the gas it stalls.

so you can just imagine the irritation of me weedeating the yard, when it's on full choke, it just idles, when i half choke it, it revs up as high as it'll go till it stalls, so i gotta play with the full/half choke like it's the gas feed trigger the whole time occasionally stalling for no reason. and as soon as i put it up to no choke it just kills out.

anyway, i stopped over at a friends house, and he had what appears to be a brand new weedeater weed eater engine sitting on his bench.. he ended up just giving me the whole thing cause he somehow stripped out the pull cord (not the cord the metal rod in the middle?) and it wasn't any good.

so i get home, change over the carbs, and fired it up, it worked GREAT all night.. this week i went out and fired it up, and the damn thing is messed up again with the new carb. but this time, it idles at half choke, and the trigger works, but with no choke it kills out, and full choke is only good for starting it (kills out if left there)

anybody know whats going on with this thing? i know my gas mix might be a little messed up, i'm using that 3 year old gas that wouldn't burn in my mazda, but i've been using that in the mower too and it doesn't give me any problems other than a little smokage..

The carbs on those things are only slightly larger than a model airplane motor I swear. As a result, if you add too much oil to the gas, it's like you added a quart too much. Do youself a favor and pick up a RatioRite measuring cup.
You can find them in motorcycle stores or catalogs like say Dennis Kirk. Or google it so you can at least see what one looks like. I can't stress how critical That initial oil measurement on a fuel system that small is. Once you see the graduations on the side of the ratio rite cup, you really start to appreciate how closely just a little more oil can change the ratio radicaly from an optimum 50:1 to a sludgy 40:1 instantly. Throw the old mix out, clean the airfilter, clean the sparkplug (also critical), blast out that tiny carb with a little gumout and then refuel it.
Only then will you be ready to "whip it! whip it good!"

ya well thanks to my boys i'm down to about a tank left of this old stuff, they knocked the can over in my front yard.. it was kinda interesting watching it burn when i set it on fire tho! i thought i had mixed it right, but i'll make sure and do it right this time.. last time i just kinda dumped a little oil in a gallon jug.. about what i thought i normally did. i use old oil i get out of cars and stuff, from a 55 gal barrel drum i dump old oil in..

Pick up a quart of actual 2 stroke oil, that makes a difference too.
I use synthetic 2 stroke oil, but I have several 2 stroke engines. In addition to 2 weed whips, I've got to keep a chainsaw, a leafblower and 2 sleds running.
Another trick is to pre measure the oil and have it at the ready in their own little single serve containers, say for 1 gal batches at a time.
50:1 requires 2.56 oz. of oil per gal. of gas.
40:1 requires 3.2 oz. of oil per gal. of gas.
So you can see how easy it is to throw that ratio way, way off.
